Last summer, we raised funds to sponsor and complete a make-over of two bedrooms and a bathroom at Families Moving Forward shelter in Durham. This is the family we welcomed home to their new space. Helping create this transformation and seeing the smiles on this family’s face was one of the most heart-warming experiences of our lives. PORCH is a small, grassroots hunger relief organization that makes a big impact! Every month, Neighborhood Coordinators collect food and cash donations, and then volunteers sort and distribute bags of fresh and non-perishable food to local families, pantries, and schools. The problem of hunger is real! About 12 percent of Orange County residents face food insecurity. One-fourth of Orange County children live in poor or low-income households. Sadly, with rising costs, more and more families are struggling to ensure there is food on the table each day. In 2021, PORCH provided 350,000+ pounds of fresh food directly to 500+ families and 8,668 bags of non-perishable food to pantries and families in Chapel Hill-Carrboro. PORCH has been an important part of our family for years.
